Relinquishing Your Pet

At Helping Paws, we understand that sometimes, despite your best efforts, surrendering a pet becomes necessary. We are here to assist with compassion and care. As a no-kill shelter, our space is limited, so we aim to ensure every pet receives the best possible chance at a new, loving home.

Important Considerations

  • We cannot accommodate pets with serious behavior issues but can recommend trainers or behaviorists for support.

  • Shelters can be stressful environments; some pets may not adapt well.

Steps to Surrender Your Pet

  1. Complete the Form:

  2. Provide Medical Records:

    • Request your pet’s health records be sent directly to Helping Paws from your veterinarian.

  3. Wait for Contact:

    • After receiving all necessary information, we will reach out if space is available to schedule an appointment.

  4. Prepare for Your Appointment:

    • Dogs must be on leashes, and cats in carriers.

    • The 30–45-minute appointment includes:

      • A health exam

      • A heartworm test (dogs) or FeLV/FIV test (cats)

      • A behavior/temperament evaluation

  5. Review Outcomes:

    • We’ll discuss the results and options to ensure the best decision for your pet.

Special Notes

  • Biting Incidents: If your pet has bitten someone in the last 10 days, contact McHenry County Animal Control.

  • Crisis Situations: For urgent needs, McHenry County Animal Control is an open relinquishment facility available to assist.
