Senior to Senior

Here at Helping Paws we believe senior citizens should have pets. This is why we have our Senior to Senior Program.

Older animals have much to offer and make some of the best companions. Helping Paws believes that just as animals of all ages should have loving companions, so should people. Our Senior to Senior adoption program is all about senior citizens rediscovering the joys of having a cat or dog in their lives. The program helps place senior cats and dogs, who are 7 years of age and older, with senior citizens who are 65 years of age or older. The adoption fee is waived for any approved senior citizen adopting a senior pet.

When you open your heart and home to an older dog or cat they really do show their appreciation and are likely to form a wonderful bond with their new human caretakers. It has also been shown there are many benefits to adopting an older animal.

Benefits of Adopting a Senior

  • Research suggests that companion animals, such as cats and dogs, can help improve our physical and mental health. By adopting and spending time with an animal, you may experience the benefits of lowered stress levels. Pet owners also have been found to be sick less often.
  • Cats and dogs provide friendship and opportunities for interacting with others which an older person may miss if family is far away or not around on a regular basis.
  • The company of a beloved pet has been proven to reduce depression and help people deal with loss and grief.
  • The quiet home of a senior citizen is the perfect match for an older animal looking for a new home and a less stressful environment.
  • Senior animals are often a gentler, calmer companion and usually are already trained.
Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day. It is amazing how much love and laughter they bring into our lives and even how much closer we become with each other because of them.” ― John Grogan, Marley and Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog
